Vital records are incredibly complicated… every state has different years of availability and laws for how vital records are administered, which differ depending on which type of record you are seeking. And to add to the confusion, state health departments usually only maintain a certain year range, with all prior records having to be requested from a county office, if they are even available at all!
On this website, we are working to organize every single vital records office in the United States, complete with year availability and an overview of what those county offices provide. If you are a genealogist, we hope you find this directory useful in easily locating the information you seek. Use the links on the left side of the page to select the state you are looking for information in.
Uncertified vital records are simply for informational purposes, most popularly used by genealogists and family historians as a tool to trace their ancestry.
Certified vital records are bona-fide documents of proof issued by the state. In some instances, such as applying for a passport, you are required to show a certified birth certificate, official proof that you are exactly who you say you are.
Every single state has different rules & requirements regarding if a vital record is public record or closed. Some states open documents to the public after a certain number of years, while others stay closed forever.
Each page on this website will give you the most targeted and accurate information regarding the types of records that are available in a particular state and county, the contact information to the state department or county recorder.
In general, the specific county office where the vital record was recorded can provide the oldest records for its citizens, and also provide the quickest service, because state laws were not yet passed which required the state department to handle vital statistics.
Some states, like Alabama, have a statewide system, while others don't have a state department and everything must be requested from the county office.
